The Day Your Website Dies

A while ago I wrote a post about the importance of backing up your website. A somewhat timely post in my case!website dies image

A few days ago, I noticed my website was down. Not a major problem – servers have glitches, and they can often go down for a few minutes here and there; but they’re usually back up and running within half an hour.

An hour later, I become more concerned.

Two hours later, I get a little jumpy. At which point, I emailed the guy that arranges my hosting.

It turns out, they’d suffered a major server failure. The cause, I have no idea. But seemingly a lot of people were affected. Overall, my website was down for just under 48hours. A length of time that in online terms, feels like an eternity. I was panicking that people would think I’ve gone out of business.

Luckily, when the site came back online, nothing was lost – I didn’t have to rely on my backup to reinstate it. However, I was reassured that should the worst have happened, I could have re-uploaded all of my website’s content to be back to where it was before it went down.

So again, to reiterate the point in my previous post on this subject matter; if you haven’t done so yet – back up your website! Because you never know when you may need it!
