Olympians – A Time For True Role Models

I’ve not really been overly enamoured with the whole Olympic thing over the last few months/years, not by being against it per se, just that it had no impact on my life whatsoever and I suppose I was rather indifferent to it all. However, over the course of the last week or so, I am now absolutely loving the olympics in general. I’m amazed and delighted as to how well Team GB are doing, and hopefully will continue to do!

What certainly has become apparent is the amount of actual, true role models that kids can look up to. Not just Team GB but across the board. These men and women who have often sacrificed a lot to get them where they are now, the hard work, determination, focus and drive they’ve shown to power through to try and win gold.

THESE are the people young kids and teenagers should aspire to be like, and NOT the constant media attention that is given to fame hungry idiots who appear on reality tv shows just to get famous. It’s people like that that drive me mad with despair; allowing young people to be encouraged to grow up to be vacuous souls that exist in the public eye for absolutely no reason at all.

These people often claim that they enter these reality shows where they’re trapped with countless other vacuous beings ‘to find themselves’.

I say tosh. If you want to ‘find yourself’, go and spend a month in a private silent retreat in Bhutan; not enter a studio that will televise your antics to the nation.

England, Great Britain, I say NO. No longer should we give ongoing airtime to these people. Concentrate on the people that are actually worth looking up to, who kids should aspire to be like; not necessarily from a sporting perspective, but from the kinds of mindsets these sportspeople have, just as entrepreneurs do. To have that hunger for success, not to make ‘stuff’ simply to make money, but to make a difference. To make an impact on the world in some way. THAT is what we should be teaching young people today, not how to become an empty drone.

That’s my thoughts on it anyway. Apologies it’s ended up in a ranty way, but I feel the message is valid!

What do you say? Valid point, or just ranty nonsense?

  1. I agree 100%.

Such great role models that not only handle the high’s but also the low’s. Dedicating large chucks of their lives to try and be the best at what they do, with many getting by with little sponsorship. A great and timely post.

    • Completely right Mr C! Time and dedication to the N’th degree, aiming to win a medal, not for fame and fortune.

Whereas lesser people would enter a house for 4 months, come out at the end of it to wads of cash. I just don’t get it! It infuriates me. I’m infuriated with the people who watch that drivel to enable it to carry on, it’s unjust.
